Shrine History
On September 9, in the 3rd year of the Keiun Era (706 A.D.) in the reign of the 42nd Emperor Monmu, the shrine was established in what then was called Arakura-Township, Yatsushiro-County, Kai Province. It was meant to enshrine the guardian deity of the Fuji-Kitaguchi Township (now Fujiyoshida city).
Mt. Fuji erupted in the second year of the Daido Era (807 A.D.) in the reign of the 51st Emperor Heizei, and on August 22, an envoy from the Imperial Court visited the shrine to perform the Mount Fuji Fire Ceremony for the safety of the land. At that time, Emperor Heizei gave the shrine the title of "The First Mountain of the Three Provinces", as well as an Imperial inscription on the Otorii Gate, a gold, and an imperial envoy's mask. This mask is currently on display at the Fujiyoshida City Museum.
Once every sixty years a grand ceremonial festival called “Gokoui-sai” is held. It is a special ritual in which a weaver spends a week in purification at the shrine and weaves a garment to dress for the guardian deity.
The shrine is located halfway up Mount Arakura, north of Shimoyoshida Station on the Fujikyu Line. You can first see a large red torii gate harmoniously placed in a green forest. After climbing the first set of stairs and passing through the torii gate, a hand-cleansing basin is situated on the left, a Kagura Stage sits on the right, and you can see the main shrine building with two rooms built in Nagare-zukuri style, and the hall of worship with three majestic rooms.
The shrine area is known both locally and from afar as Arakurayama Sengen Park, and attracts many worshippers. The red Otorii gate and the five-story Chureito Pagoda (memorial tower for the war dead) are symbols of the area and offer a view which is second to none.
